Exporting a vehicle? You will have to arrange for the vehicle documents to be validated (cleared for export) by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Customs). Not all transportation companies are set up to provide export title validations. Farber and Company provides this service.
Here are the steps for you/your customers to have vehicle documentation validated through Farber and Company:
- Farber and Company must receive full documentation a minimum of SIX days prior to the actual date scheduled for export.
- Provide Farber and Company with the original title (pink slip) which we present to U.S. Customs for authorization of export. Title must be signed by buyer and seller. If no title is available, and your vehicle would normally require a title, then you must apply for a new title. Sometimes and in some States, the process for obtaining a new title may take quite some time (easily 6-8 weeks). Please ensure you have enough lead time to cover this issue.
- Some vehicles will have a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, also known as an “MSO” or “factory title”. MSOs must be signed by buyer and seller and the signatures must be notarized.
- Some vehicles, such as some construction equipment, will only have a Bill of Sale. Bills of Sale must be signed by buyer and seller and the signatures must be notarized. In addition, it must show that it has been paid in full AND how funds were sent and received (i.e.: cash, check, wire transfer, etc.).
- In addition to the title of a vehicle, some Customs offices require presentation of an original bill of sale. If you don't have a bill of sale and you want a form, try getting a form at: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg135.pdf Bill of Sale must be signed by buyer and seller.
- Full shipper and consignee information, including name, address, telephone, email and contact(s) is required. The shipper must fill out, complete and sign a Power of Attorney or “POA” (with EIN number top left) as is required by Customs. Click for a POA form here.
- If the shipper is an individual, a clear copy of the shipper’s picture ID is also required.
- Please provide full booking information, including where the vehicle is being loaded (either into a container or to a terminal in the case of a Roll On–Roll Off, or “Ro-Ro” shipment). If it is being loaded into a container, please provide the container number.
- Some Customs offices at certain U.S. ports of export require the cargo to have confirmation of delivery into the terminal, or port of export. This confirmation may be a terminal receipt or dock receipt or signed letter of intent from the ocean carrier.
- If shipping by air, the air carrier air waybill number will be required along with schedule and routing details.
