EIN - Employer Identification Number

AES Broadcast 11/23/2009 Broadcast # 2009035A
Reminder - Interim Final Rule - Social Security Number (SSN)

This is an informational broadcast regarding the Interim Final Rule issued by the U.S. Census Bureau.  This rule revises the FTR to eliminate
the collection of Social Security Numbers (SSN) for identification purposes of the Privacy Act of 1974, Title 5, United States Code, Section 552a to ensure that the U.S. Principal Party in Interest (USPPI's) or U.S. authorized agent's personal information, such as its SSN, is protected.

All USPPIs who currently report an SSN when filing in the AES must provide an Employer Identification Number (EIN).  All U.S. authorized agents who correctly report a SSN when filing in the AES must provide an EIN or Dun and Bradstreet number (DUNS) for identifications purposes.  An EIN is available to both businesses and individuals and can be obtained by registering with the Internal Revenue Service at http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html
or by calling 1-800-829-4933 and following the instructions.  A DUNS number is available only to business entities and can be obtained by registering with Dun and Bradstreet at www.dnb.com/us.

This rule became effective September 4, 2009 and will be implemented on December 3, 2009. The rule can be found in its entirety at
http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/regulations/fedregnotices/index.html or at http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/regulations/regs/regulations20130603-federalregister.pdf
